The Issue

I am anaphylactic to paprika, a condition I share with 12% of Canadians who have spice allergies.

Our lives are put at risk every day due to the lack of specific labeling of spices on food products. Currently, ingredients like paprika are only required under the generalized term 'spices' or 'spice and spice extracts.'

This perilous ambiguity leaves people like me vulnerable to potentially life-threatening reactions because I—and countless others—cannot ascertain the safety of the food we consume.

For years, mustard has been mandated to appear on ingredient lists, yet individual spices have been inexplicably exempt from this requirement, despite the growing prevalence of spice allergies across Canada.

How is it fair that Canadian consumers cannot access critical information necessary for their safety? Clear labeling could prevent accidental exposure to potentially deadly allergens; something I have had the unfortunate experience of having three times to date, causing full anaphylaxis.

The time has come for Health Canada to mandate the individual listing of all spice ingredients. This would not just ensure informed choices for those with allergies but would also bring a sense of security to over a million Canadians whose lives are jeopardized by the current, flawed labeling practices.

Canada prides itself on a robust food safety system, but without this essential change, we are failing a significant segment of our population. Other countries have recognized the importance of transparent food labeling, and it's imperative that Canada follows suit. By requiring the specific listing of all spices, we can significantly reduce the risk of allergic reactions and prevent unnecessary tragedies.

I urge everyone to sign this petition and help bring about a critical change in our food labeling regulations. Together, we can persuade Health Canada to take the necessary actions to protect all Canadians from the hidden hazards lurking in their food.
