Require immediate right of reply for MPs during pmqs

The Issue

Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) in the UK Parliament is a weekly institution, designed to hold the government to account and allow elected representatives to voice their constituents' concerns. However, during these sessions, criticism is often directed at Members of Parliament (MPs) without the opportunity for an immediate response. This is very common against Reform representatives at the moment. They are gagged and can't reply to mud slinging. In a busy world exposed to immediate media scrutiny, it's essential that those accused or criticised have the right to defend themselves or offer clarification immediately.

The dynamics of PMQs, with its lively exchanges and time constraints, often mean that MPs may be criticised many times without an immediate chance to respond. This can lead to misunderstandings, perpetuated misinformation, and an erosion of trust in democratic processes. Consequently, MPs should be granted an immediate right to reply during PMQs when criticised for more than say two seconds, ensuring transparency and accountability.

This change will enrich debates, allow viewers a clearer perspective on the issues at hand, and promote a more balanced and informed political discussion. It will empower our MPs to effectively communicate on behalf of their constituents, and it will ensure that accusations or criticisms do not go unchallenged, fostering a fairer parliamentary process.

Implementing this right will require adjustments in parliamentary rules. Allocating a set time—perhaps an additional 30 seconds per instance—for an MP to respond when criticised could be a manageable solution that maintains the flow and structure of PMQs.

With your support, we can advocate for a more equal platform where representatives of the public can be heard and defended, particularly where the media don't stand up for them either. Sign this petition to request the UK Parliament to grant MPs an immediate right to reply during PMQs. Your signature can lead to a more representative government without.
