Require ID verification and background checks on dating platforms

The Issue

I met a man on an online dating site who manipulated, harassed, and followed me, leaving me fearful for my safety. I later discovered he had lied about his name, age, and had a violent criminal history, including violent attacks on previous partners. Despite this, he was freely using dating apps. It's unacceptable that people with such dangerous records can access potential victims.

Online dating platforms have revolutionised how we meet people, offering the potential of exciting and meaningful connections. However, with these conveniences come risks, especially when users can easily fake identities and hide disturbing pasts. Current practices on these platforms fall short of providing essential safeguards for users, allowing people with histories of stalking, harassment, or violence to engage unsuspecting victims.

Requiring identity verification and background checks on dating platforms is a critical step in preventing harm to users. This can be achieved by mandating that all users provide valid identification before engaging with others on the platform. Platforms can integrate secure systems that validate IDs alongside screening potential users against databases of individuals with multiple and/ or dangerous convictions against romantic partners.

To protect users and maintain trust, dating platforms must take responsibility for the safety of their communities. Implementing these changes will not only decrease the likelihood of encountering dangerous individuals but will also foster a more genuine and secure environment for users to form meaningful relationships.

Your safety matters and no one should fear for their well-being while seeking companionship online. Sign this petition to urge online dating companies to verify user identity and prohibit access to individuals with multiple convictions for stalking, harassment, or partner violence.

Together, we can make online dating safer for everyone.
