Many vulnerable senior citizens in our community are now left without critical support systems.
Age UK has always been a lifeline, offering companionship, meals, and activities that keep our elders, the backbone of our community, engaged and healthy. These services are not just amenities; they are necessities. Whether it's the Meals on Wheels service ensuring nutritional needs are met or the daily social activities providing much-needed interaction, the abrupt halt in these offerings has left a void that impacts many.
Statistics show that social isolation and lack of community services significantly contribute to the deterioration of physical and mental health in the elderly. According to Age UK, around 1.4 million older people in the UK are often lonely, and those receiving regular services are less likely to fall into depression or poor health. We cannot overlook these urgent needs.
The Hammersmith & Fulham Council needs to re-evaluate the budget allocation, ensuring Age UK receives the appropriate funding to resume its operations without delay. Continuing these services will safeguard our community members' quality of life and allow them to thrive rather than merely survive.
We propose that the council prioritizes redirecting funds to support these existing programs, perhaps by revising non-essential spending allocations or seeking additional charitable partnerships.
