Change the Law to stop Freeholders banning well- behaved Small Pets in Leasehold Homes
The Issue
More people live alone than ever, and loneliness and isolation have been proven detrimental to mental health, particularly for older individuals. Three years ago, I purchased a flat after my daughter moved to the USA. Retired and often alone at home, I sought the companionship of a small dog. However, despite paying an excessive service charge for my flat, the Freeholders have banned all pets in the building.
This policy feels inherently unfair and ignores the significant benefits that small, well-behaved pets offer to individuals living alone. Research has shown that pet ownership can alleviate feelings of loneliness, reduce stress, and bring joy and purpose to daily life—especially for seniors who may face additional barriers to social interaction.
In many cities around the world, progressive property policies recognize the human-animal bond and permit small pets in leasehold properties, provided certain conditions are met to ensure the well-being of the community and property maintenance. Similar flexible and reasonable rules should be adopted across all residential buildings.
It is crucial that Freeholders reconsider and allow residents the right to own small pets. This change will not only improve the quality of life for many but also demonstrate compassion and understanding towards those who benefit most from animal companionship.
Let's advocate for a community that values the mental and emotional well-being of its residents. It's time to urge Freeholders to adapt their policies and allow small pets in leasehold properties for the benefit of all. Please sign this petition to support this cause. Its a human right!
