Require free transit for youths and low-income adults in Minnesota
The Issue
After hearing about how Seattle area transit agencies have collaborated on a free subsidized annual pass program for low-income adults, I feel that Minnesota should require all transit agencies in the state to have such a program. It's the most cost-effective solution for adults living off of supplemental security income and other cash assistance programs. Moreover, the Seattle area transit agencies also allow all youths under 18 to ride for free. This inspired my call to action for Minnesota.
It’s time to make public transportation accessible to everyone in Minnesota, particularly in Minneapolis/St. Paul, where transit is a crucial part of daily life. Many families struggle to afford basic transportation. For children, access to free rides means more opportunities, including getting to school, accessing after-school activities, libraries, and engaging in safe and supervised summer programs. It not only aids in their education and development but also enhances their independence and mobility.
For adults below the federal poverty guidelines, a free annual transit pass is a lifeline. It permits them to pursue job opportunities, attend essential appointments, and connect with services that are vital to living with dignity. Transportation should not be a barrier to improving their economic situation or accessing healthcare and education.
According to a study by the University of Minnesota, nearly 11% of Minnesota residents live below the federal poverty line. Implementing a comprehensive transit program like Seattle's could significantly reduce transportation costs for these individuals, enabling them to redirect limited resources toward other pressing needs such as housing, food, and healthcare.
Moreover, these actions have the potential to reduce traffic congestion and environmental impact, aligning with Minnesota's environmental goals. Free transit for underserved populations can foster community inclusivity and reduce air pollution, contributing to a healthier and more cohesive community.
I urge local government agencies and state transportation authorities to consider the benefits that a similar program can bring to our state. By implementing free rides for youth and a free annual pass for adults below federal poverty guidelines, we take a vital step toward building a just and equitable society for all Minnesotans.
Join me in advocating for free public transportation to youth and economically disadvantaged adults in Minnesota. Sign this petition to show your support for creating a more inclusive and equal transportation system today.
