Require food labels in Canada to specify tree nut content

Require food labels in Canada to specify tree nut content
The Issue
I am the parent of a son who has a life-threatening allergy to cashews and pistachios. However, he can safely eat other types of tree nuts. Unfortunately, many food labels in Canada are vague, leaving out specific tree nuts that may be included or cross-contaminated within products. But “tree nuts” include many different nuts — almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, and others — and allergic reactions can vary from one nut to another. This generalisation makes it incredibly challenging for families like mine to make safe food choices, and we end up having to avoid a wide variety of products unnecessarily. This generalisation makes it incredibly challenging for families like mine to make safe food choices, and we end up having to avoid a wide variety of products unnecessarily.
Tree nut allergies affect many individuals and families across Canada, with some types of tree nuts being allergenic while others are safe. Yet, the current labelling practices are not adequate in providing the specificity needed for safe consumer choices.
We are calling on Health Canada to require food manufacturers to clearly specify on their labels which types of tree nuts are present or potentially cross-contaminated in their products. This change is not just about convenience but essential safety. By providing clear labelling, individuals with tree nut allergies can safely navigate food choices, reducing the risk of allergenic reactions and improving the quality of life for thousands of Canadians.
Several countries, including the United States and the European Union, have implemented more detailed allergen labelling laws to protect consumers with specific allergies. Canada should follow suit by introducing similar regulations to protect those vulnerable to tree nut allergies.
Clear and specific tree nut labelling would allow families and individuals dealing with tree nut allergies to make informed and safe choices without having to compromise on the variety or convenience of their diets. It's time for Canada to make this vital change in food labelling laws.
Please sign my petition to urge Health Canada to mandate clear tree nut labelling on all food products. Together, we can help ensure safer food options for those with tree nut allergies.
