Require Florida Power & Light to Re-route Power Lines for Health Safety

The Issue

As a resident of Hibiscus Park & Paramount Estates in Stuart, FL, the plight of our neighborhood deeply concerns me, particularly as a parent. My two young boys, full of energy and love for the outdoors, regularly play in our backyard. Yet, this innocent joy remains overshadowed by a looming threat: the large power lines operated by Florida Power & Light (FPL) running directly over our homes.

These power lines emit extremely high and potentially dangerous levels of Electromagnetic Field (EMF). Our community has witnessed the ill effects of this with instances of brain cancer and other health issues among our neighbors, raising alarming questions about the true cost of these power lines running through residential backyards. Safe EF levels should be below 6 V/m (anything above 50 V/m is extremely dangerous); however, the readings in my backyard peak at 1006 V/m which is way above the safe limit. Other homes in the neighborhood have even worse readings because they are right under these power lines.

Bear in mind, prolonged exposure to high levels of EMF is associated with serious health hazards. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans. Despite the potential danger, FPL has chosen inaction over the safety of our community.

We, the residents of Stuart, FL, call for immediate action. We urge FPL to re-route these power lines along the road or underground. This solution would significantly reduce the EMF exposure, ensuring a safer environment for both our families and future generations in our beloved neighborhood.

We consider this not just a local concern but a human right to live and thrive in a safe environment. Your signature can bring us a step closer to the change we desperately need to safeguard our neighborhood and our children's health. Please sign and share our petition. Together, we can ensure the safety of our families today and for years to come.
