Require Facebook to Strengthen Account Recovery Email Security

The Issue

I, along with many of my friends and family, have experienced the distressing situation of having our Facebook accounts hijacked. My husband's account was hacked and he had to send a photo of his ID to Facebook to verify it was him. Facebook then approved his ID verification and  added his original email  back to the recovery emails. However they did not remove the hackers email so he still is not able to regain his account access.

This is not an isolated issue; it's a widespread problem that affects countless users worldwide. The current system allows hackers to easily change the account recovery email, thereby seizing control over innocent people's accounts.

In September of 2021, a web scraper on a popular dark web hacking forum attempted to sell the personal data stolen from 1.5 billion Facebook accounts; if the claim is true this would make it the largest Facebook dump in history.

In 2018 at least 30 million Facebook accounts were hacked in a single data breach.

Instagram has tallied 36,000 queries a month regarding information on how to recover a hacked account.

In April of 2021, 530 million Facebook accounts were compromised, exposing the names, phone numbers, account names, and passwords of Facebook users.

300,000 Facebook accounts are hacked every single day.

These taggering numbers highlight the urgent need for enhanced security measures on this widely-used platform.

We are calling on Facebook to implement stricter procedures for changing account recovery emails. This could include additional verification steps or notifications sent directly to users when changes are attempted.

By doing so, we can significantly reduce the risk of account theft and protect millions of users from experiencing what my friends, family and I have gone through. It's time for Facebook to take responsibility for its user's security and privacy seriously.

Please sign this petition urging Facebook to strengthen their account recovery email security measures immediately.
