Require equal support and opportunities for Women’s basketball in English University Sport
The Issue
I am a passionate player for the women’s English University Sport (EUS) basketball team, and I have witnessed firsthand the disparity in support, organisation and funding between our women’s team and the men's basketball team. Despite the promises of equal treatment and opportunities, there has been a significant gap in the provision of resources and support for the women's team compared to our male counterparts. This discrepancy in treatment not only affects our team’s ability to perform but also sends a discouraging message about the value of women’s sports.
In the case of the men's team, everything seems to be effortlessly arranged, from customised EUS kits to a meticulously organised ‘Nations Tournament’. They receive comprehensive coverage for travel and accommodation, with all expenses paid for at least two weeks in advance. However, when it comes to the women’s team, there seems to be an unnerving silence from the organising body. Communication is almost non-existent, having to wear a local clubs team kit instead of an EUS kit and critical support like accommodation and travel costs are often either partially covered or not at all addressed by our universities.
This inequality is particularly frustrating because English Universities Sport (EUS) should be a leading example of fair play and equal treatment, supporting all athletes regardless of gender. By not providing our team with the same level of support and attention as the men's team, EUS is failing its mission to promote inclusive and fair competition.
Numerous sources, including the Women's Sports Foundation, highlight that equitable funding and support significantly enhance the performance and morale of women's sports teams. When resources are allocated fairly, the benefits extend far beyond the court. Increased visibility and support for women’s sports can inspire young female athletes, foster a more inclusive sporting environment, and promote gender equality in all aspects of life.
We ask that EUS take immediate action to rectify this imbalance by providing equal support, proper planning, and effective communication for women's basketball teams similar to what is provided for men's teams. This includes ensuring that all travel and accommodation expenses are covered (in advance), kits are available and on par, and tournament planning involves both teams. This change is not just about fairness in sports; it is about setting the right precedent for future generations of athletes.
Join us in calling for EUS to uphold its commitment to equality and start treating the women's basketball teams with the respect and support they deserve. Let's make a stand for equal opportunities in sport. Your signature is powerful in driving this change. Please sign our petition and help push for an equitable sporting environment for all athletes.
