The Issue

Women in Fresno County have faced systemic inequality in accessing athletic facilities and fields provided by PARCS and other recreational entities. Despite numerous requests and repeated efforts, women are continuously being turned away when seeking equal opportunities for health and wellness. This unjust treatment not only undermines their ability to train and compete effectively but also discourages women from participating in athletic activities that are vital for their physical and mental well-being.

The current system has been structured in such a way that women are often required to compete alongside men in these facilities if they wish to engage in PARCS activities. This is not only unfair but also places women at a significant disadvantage, affecting their performance and diminishing their enthusiasm to partake in sporting endeavors.

According to Measure P guidelines, organizations receiving Measure P funds must comply with local non-discriminatory treatment, equity, and fair access requirements set by the City of Fresno and the Fresno Arts Council. It is evident that the current practices in Fresno and Clovis are not in compliance with these local mandates, requiring immediate attention and rectification.

Studies have shown that when women are provided with equal access to sports facilities, there is an increase in participation rates which significantly contributes to improved community health outcomes. Additionally, providing equitable sports opportunities fosters self-esteem, teamwork, and the development of leadership skills.

We propose the following actionable solutions to ensure equal field and facility access for women’s athletics in Fresno and Clovis:

1. Dedicated women-only activities and spaces in PARCS and recreation facilities.
2. Allocation of resources to upgrade and maintain facilities specifically for women's sports.
3. Implementation of training for staff to foster an inclusive and equitable environment.
4. Regular assessments and transparent reporting of access and resource allocation.

By signing this petition, you will urge local authorities and PARCS to take immediate action in ensuring that all women in Fresno and Clovis are granted equal access to sports facilities. Let's take a stand for fairness, equality, and opportunity for all women athletes in our community. Please sign the petition to make this change a reality.
