Require Discord to Hide User Profiles from Blocked Individuals
The Issue
I speak, borne from personal experience, of the need for greater privacy options on the social platform Discord. The current state of affairs amplifies the harassment and undeterred invasion of privacy by ill-intentioned individuals who merely create an alternate profile to reestablish unwanted contact.
Despite the block feature available, it falls short in supporting individuals like myself who seek privacy from persistent harassers. Nothing seems enough to prevent this disturbance - even if I change my username, blocked individuals can still access my profile and continue their antagonism.
Unfortunately, this is not a standalone instance. An undisclosed number of Discord's 140 million active users monthly share similar experiences in their fight for privacy and security. It underscores the pressing need for stricter privacy measures on the platform.
Harassment, unwanted contacts, and cyberstalking pose significant threats in online communities, causing psychological distress and, in myriad cases, driving people away from the platforms. A 2017 study by the Pew Research Center indicates that approximately 41% of Americans have personally experienced online harassment, being left with severe emotional trauma (source: Pew Research Center, 2017). Thus, these concerns need immediate attention and swift action to protect user privacy.
Discord is urged to implement a feature that would hide user profiles from individuals they've blocked, providing greater protection and privacy. It is important not only for me but for the countless other users who have faced or are susceptible to such harassment.
We appeal to Discord to heed our call for heightened privacy and security measures, ensuring that each user's digital experience is safe and respectful. Stand with us. Sign this petition to show your support for a safer, more private Discord.
