The issue

As consumers in Australia, we are witnessing a significant shift in the retail industry that has left many of us feeling frustrated and neglected. The increased reliance on self-checkouts in major grocery chains like Coles and Woolworths has led to the underutilization of traditional staffed checkout counters. This change not only undermines the quality of customer service but also significantly affects our shopping experience and the community at large.

Self-checkouts may offer convenience for some, but they can be impersonal and intimidating for others, particularly the elderly and those with disabilities who might struggle with such technology. A 2019 survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicated that 13.6% of the population is aged 65 and over—a demographic that might benefit greatly from the human interaction and assistance provided by staffed counters. The presence of knowledgeable staff is essential in ensuring all customers can shop efficiently and comfortably.

Moreover, while self-checkouts can expedite the checkout process for smaller shopping loads, they are often ill-suited for large family purchases, leading to frustrations and longer wait times. The lack of adequate service for these customers can lead to decreased satisfaction and even revenue loss for these companies. Deloitte’s 2020 Global Consumer Tracker has shown that customers' shopping choices are heavily influenced by the quality of customer service.

Furthermore, the scale-back of counter services contributes to the reduction of employment opportunities within the community. According to the Australian Retailers Association, over 1.2 million Australians are employed in retail, many of whom work in roles that include providing checkout services. The decline of these positions can exacerbate unemployment rates and reduce skilled job opportunities, especially for young Australians seeking entry-level positions.

We understand that innovation and technological advancements are part of the retail evolution. However, it’s imperative that we don't lose sight of the human touch that many Australian shoppers still value. The solution is simple and effective: Coles and Woolworths should maintain a balance between self-checkout stations and staffed counters to cater to the diverse needs of their customer base.

We call upon Coles and Woolworths to revisit their operations and staffing strategies, reinstating adequate staffed checkout counters. We ask for at least two staffed counters to be kept open in every store during all operational hours.

By signing this petition, you are supporting the need for tailored customer service that meets every individual's needs and for retail solutions that consider employment and community impact. Let’s urge Coles and Woolworths to reflect the true spirit of Australian service. Sign now to make a difference.
