Require Colorado Dealerships to Handle Vehicle Registration at the Time of Sale.
The Issue
Buying a vehicle in Colorado shouldn’t come with another major bill weeks or months later.
Registration on newer vehicles can easily cost $1,000 or more, on top of the payment, insurance and other expenses that come with purchasing a vehicle. Working in the automotive industry, I’ve watched countless customers deal with the same surprise.
Colorado should require dealerships to complete title and registration as part of the vehicle purchase and issue permanent standard plates at the time of sale whenever possible.
Registration costs would be handled as part of the original transaction, either paid upfront by the buyer or included in the financing or lease, instead of being left as a separate expense after the vehicle leaves the dealership.
Temporary tags should be the exception, not the standard way a dealership sale ends.
This would help:
- Prevent surprise expenses by making registration part of the total transaction from the beginning.
- Increase registration compliance by getting vehicles registered and plated at the time of purchase.
- Simplify the buying process by eliminating another trip, appointment or transaction after the sale.
- Reduce unnecessary DMV workload so county offices can focus more resources on private-party sales, title issues, out-of-state transfers and other transactions that actually require additional processing.
- Give buyers a clearer picture of the true cost of purchasing their vehicle.
If registration is required to legally drive the vehicle, there’s no reason a normal dealership purchase should leave that part unfinished.
Plate It at Purchase Colorado.
Colorado should also create a reasonable payment-plan option for drivers who are already behind on registration. The goal should be to give people a realistic path back into compliance and get more vehicles properly registered, not leave drivers stuck on expired temporary tags because the entire balance is due at once.
This isn’t about eliminating registration fees. It’s about creating a registration system that is easier to complete, more transparent for buyers and more efficient for Colorado.
Buy the car. Register the car. Leave with the plate.
