Require changing tables in all men's restrooms

The Issue

Being a single father is a rewarding yet challenging journey. One of the unexpected difficulties I've encountered is the lack of changing tables in men's restrooms. Time and again, I've found myself in the uncomfortable position of having to change my son's diaper in a less than ideal setting—often opting for unsanitary bathroom floors or the backseat of my car.

This is not just my story; this is a reality faced by countless fathers and male guardians who simply want to provide basic care for their children. As the dynamics of family roles evolve, and more fathers take on parenting responsibilities solo or in partnership, it's becoming increasingly clear that public facilities need to adapt by offering the same conveniences and support as those provided for mothers.

Currently, the lack of changing tables in men's restrooms perpetuates outdated gender norms and can pose safety and hygiene risks to children. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, fathers make up about 17% of custodial parents as of 2021. Furthermore, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that men's time spent on childcare has increased by 93% over the past decade.

Public locations such as restaurants, shopping centers, airports, and entertainment venues should take immediate steps to install and maintain changing tables in all men’s restrooms. This simple infrastructural change not only promotes equality but also ensures the health and safety of our children.

We call on policymakers, business owners, and property managers to rethink the facilities offered in their establishments and work toward acts of inclusivity and practicality. Let's eliminate the unnecessary inconvenience faced by fathers and promote a family-friendly environment for all.
