Require CCTV monitoring in ICUs of private hospitals
The Issue
My mother was admitted to a prominent corporate hospital in Nagpur in a condition that was not dire. However, over the course of 10 days in the ICU, we were kept completely in the dark regarding her treatment and medication. No records or information were shared with us. During her time in the ICU, she suffered a heart attack and was put on a ventilator. Tragically, despite the supposed care, we lost her a few days later. My family has been left with unanswered questions amidst our grief, and unfortunately, this lack of transparency in ICU care is not unique to us reported by many others.
In India, private hospitals often operate with a level of opacity that leaves families uninformed about their loved ones' treatment in critical care environments like the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The absence of CCTV cameras in these sensitive areas creates an environment ripe for negligence and malpractice. According to various reports and surveys, a significant percentage of families have experienced similar issues where they feel isolated from understanding the medical processes that their beloved ones undergo in critical care.
Implementing CCTV monitoring in ICUs can be a game-changer. It not only enhances transparency but can also act as a deterrent against negligence or misconduct. CCTV footage can serve as an objective record of the care administered, providing families with peace of mind and a tool to address any discrepancies or concerns about the treatment process. In other countries, like the UK and Australia, similar measures have been proposed and are in various stages of implementation, showcasing the positive role of surveillance in sensitive medical settings.
With India home to over 12,000 private hospitals, the implementation of CCTV cameras in ICUs can revolutionize patient care by ensuring accountability and transparency. We urge the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and private healthcare institutions to make CCTV monitoring mandatory in ICUs. By doing so, we protect families from the uncertainty and grief of not knowing the facts and improve the overall trust in healthcare services.
Join us in demanding that every family be given the peace of mind that their loved ones are receiving the best possible care. Sign this petition to enforce CCTV monitoring in ICUs of private hospitals across India, safeguarding patients and ensuring the integrity of healthcare services. Your signature can be a powerful step toward reforming the healthcare system and ensuring that no family suffers in the dark like mine did. Please sign this petition to bring about this crucial change.
