The Issue

My daughter who is autistic, 6 and non-verbal has been subjected to an abuse allegation by her special education teacher. She will not be returning to the district next year but not because of said allegation. The note sent home in her backpack was vague but specified these acts took place within her special education classroom, who has all non verbal children and does not have cameras. Proof was not found, and of course no one within the school is talking out of fear. The administration is saying it is a personality conflict between two adults and just expects me to believe that and move on.

Special education students are among the most vulnerable in our schools, often unable to communicate effectively about their experiences. Installing cameras and audio equipment in self-contained special education classrooms can provide a layer of protection for not only these students, but teachers who are being accused out of spite. Ensuring transparency and accountability on all ends.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), there were approximately 7 million students aged 3-21 receiving special education services under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) during the 2019-2020 school year. Many parents across the country share similar concerns about their children's safety.

We need Collinsville Public Schools to take action now by requiring cameras and audio recording devices in self-contained special education classrooms if requested by a parent(s). This will help protect our children who have no voice.
