Require Bunnings to stop selling invasive plant species
The issue
I am an enthusiastic but novice gardener and have always trusted that I’m doing a good thing for the environment by buying plants for my garden.
I was dismayed to find out that many of the plants I boughtfrom Bunnings were, in fact, invasive species in my region, recognised by our local council as a series threat to our native plants and animals.
Invasive species of plant pose a serious threat to our local ecosystems in Australia, spreading rapidly and overtaking native flora. Many of these plants can’t be used by pollinators and some kill native bees or destroy habitats for our native wildlife.
Some invasive species change the soil chemistry, clog our local waterways and even increase the risk of wildfires
Invasive plant species are a significant environmental concern and we cannot accept the damage to our environment for profit.
Bunnings is one of Australia's largest and most popular retail chains for garden supplies and it has a responsibility to ensure the products it sells do not harm our environment.
We call upon Bunnings and other nurseries to be proactive in encouraging responsible gardening practices. This includes verifying that the plants they sell are not classified as invasive in our region.
Eradicating and managing established invasive plants costs governments, landowners, and communities billions of dollars every year.
Join me in urging Bunnings - and other nurseries - to stop selling invasive plant species and protect Australia's precious ecosystems. Please sign this petition and help us safeguard our natural environment for future generations.
