The Issue

Every night, the struggle to get home from work feels more daunting. I personally rely on Buffalo's metro rail service to commute to my job, but the recent schedule changes have turned this reliance into a challenge. The last departure time on weekdays has been pushed an entire hour earlier, trapping me and many others in a commute conundrum. My coworkers and I aren't alone; countless people across sectors like hospitality and healthcare depend on public transport to safely and reliably get to and from their workplaces.

Buffalo's recent changes to rail and bus schedules have significantly shortened the operating hours, leaving many workers in a lurch. For instance, those working late shifts at restaurants, hospitals, and other essential services find themselves without viable transport options, impacting their ability to earn a living. This isn't just about convenience; it's about livelihood and ensuring that all members of our community can maintain their jobs without the stress of transportation woes.

National statistics reveal that nearly 30% of public transport users are workers who finish their shifts after traditional business hours. In cities like Buffalo, where public transport is a linchpin of daily life, the need for extended operational hours is critical. By extending the service hours of Buffalo's public transport, we not only support the workforce but also the economy by ensuring that businesses can function smoothly without interruptions due to staffing issues. Not only that, but extended hours can provide additional jobs to those who work for the NFTA by providing more shifts to fill in extended time slots.

We urge the Buffalo transit authorities to reconsider and revise the current schedules of both bus and metro rail lines to accommodate the real needs of riders. Extending service hours will better align with the work schedules of many residents, providing a reliable transport option for those finishing late or starting early.

Join us in calling for this necessary change. Sign the petition and advocate for improved transit schedules that reflect the community's needs. Let's work together to ensure Buffalo's public transport supports its hardworking residents.
