The Issue

My sons attend Finchley Catholic High School, and every morning, I am filled with a sense of dread as they navigate the dangerous road in front of the school gates. The road is not only busy with the school rush but also serves as a shortcut in the area, intensifying the volume of traffic. Given the road's perilous nature, characterized by a blind bend when coming down the hill and a blind railway bridge when coming up, it is a hazard waiting to happen.

The absence of a safe crossing point puts not just my children, but all the students at risk daily. This stretch of road deserves more than just cautious awareness; it demands action in the form of a Zebra crossing. Such an infrastructure would serve to protect our children and ease the minds of countless parents who share my worries every day.

Statistics show that pedestrian crossings significantly reduce the incidence of road accidents, particularly in school zones. Numerous studies confirm that Zebra crossings enhance the safety of pedestrians by increasing driver awareness and reducing vehicle speed. Implementing a Zebra crossing will serve as a preventive measure that could save lives.

We have seen from other parts of London and the wider UK, the success of these crossings in promoting safe school commutes. The installation of a Zebra crossing outside Finchley Catholic High School is a feasible solution and a necessary one.

I urge Barnet Council to prioritize the safety of our children and install a Zebra crossing without delay. Please sign this petition and lend your voice to create a safer environment for all students at Finchley Catholic High School.
