Require autopsies for all fentanyl overdose cases in California

The Issue

On April 10, 2025, my fiancée was discovered lifeless atop a children's playground at La Sierra Park, an event that forever changed my life. The police quickly attributed her death to a fentanyl overdose, closing the case without further investigation. However, I couldn't shake the feeling that things didn't add up. I noticed blood seeping from her mouth, unexplained bruises on her forehead, and the perplexing absence of her shoes. Her purse was scattered across the playground, makeup strewn everywhere. She never used fentanyl, and the evidence suggested something far more sinister than an accidental overdose.

This deeply personal experience has led me to advocate for change in California. I propose a new mandate: every case of suspected fentanyl overdose must be thoroughly examined with a complete autopsy and investigation. Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, is now infamous for its deadly nature, claiming countless lives across California and the United States. However, we must not allow it to obscure potential foul play. It's all too easy for foul play or even murder to be mistakenly categorized as an overdose, leaving possible crimes uninvestigated and justice unserved.

According to the CDC, over 100,000 people died from drug overdoses in the United States in a recent year, with the majority involving opioids like fentanyl. With such alarming statistics, it's vital that state authorities implement rigorous procedures to discern the true cause of death. The presence of fentanyl should trigger a comprehensive forensic investigation, not a swift conclusion of overdose.

Fentanyl-related deaths are a growing concern, and we need to ensure that every case receives the attention it deserves. By mandating thorough autopsies, we could unveil hidden crimes and provide families like mine with the closure they need and deserve. **Transparency and diligence in these investigations will not only help identify foul play but also deter potential criminals who exploit the opioid crisis as a cover for their horrendous acts.**

This call for change is not just about my fiancée; it’s about safeguarding the entire community. Together, let’s demand a change in the protocol for these cases in California. We owe it to those we have lost and to those who may still be at risk.

Sign this petition to urge California lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to require mandatory autopsies and thorough investigations for all suspected fentanyl overdose cases. Let's ensure that justice is served for every victim.
