Require automatic lighting in all public parks in Riverside, CA

The Issue

On April 10, 2025, my fiancée, Tiffany Rene Murillo, was tragically found dead atop the children's playground at La Sierra Park in Riverside, CA. Her untimely and distressing death was quickly labeled as a fentanyl overdose, with no further investigation or public acknowledgment. To our collective dismay, her passing didn't prompt any press releases or inquiries, and even the park itself remained unaware of the incident.

La Sierra Park is shrouded in pitch-black darkness at night, creating a haven for illegal activities and making it a hotspot for crime. This lack of adequate lighting not only contributed to Tiffany's tragic fate but continues to pose a significant threat to all visitors, perpetuating an environment ripe for crime and danger. This situation cannot persist—it should not take another life lost for us to demand a safe, accessible public space for all.

Every public park in Riverside should be a place of safety and enjoyment, not trepidation and risk. Implementing automatic lighting systems or efficient overnight illumination would drastically reduce crime and increase public safety. This proposal calls for Riverside city officials to address the glaring oversight in our park safety by installing modern lighting solutions.

Statistics have shown that well-lit areas can deter crime and increase the sense of safety among community members. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, environments with adequate lighting have seen up to a 39% decrease in criminal activity. By making this change, Riverside's public parks can become spaces where we gather with family, friends, and neighbors without fear.

We urge the City of Riverside to prioritize community safety by equipping all public parks with the necessary lighting solutions. Tiffany's tragic pass should not have been in vain, and no family should have to endure the same pain and loss.

Sign this petition to demand safer public parks. With your support, we can honor Tiffany's memory and protect our community from similar tragedies in the future. Together, let's shine a light on this critical issue and make Riverside a safer place for all.
