In the rural community where I work, maternal fetal medicine (MFM) resources are scarce and the need for specialized sonographer education is crucial. Currently, sonographers working in MFM are perceived to have a greater level of education than general OB/GYN sonographers. Unfortunately, there is no certified method to validate this specialized knowledge, which can lead to challenges for both employers and sonographers.

Many new sonographers are eager to work in maternal fetal medicine; however, they often lack the specialized experience and have no official pathway to document their knowledge or education in this field. This gap not only affects the hiring process but also the quality of care that patients receive, particularly in underserved rural areas.

To address this critical issue, we urge the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) to develop a dedicated specialty exam for Maternal Fetal Medicine sonography. Creating this exam would not only ensure that sonographers have the necessary competencies but would also provide a standardized way for them to demonstrate their expertise.

A specialized MFM certification would empower sonographers to prove their skills and knowledge, allowing them to better serve their communities and advance their careers. This initiative would set a new standard in the field, elevating the level of care provided to expectant mothers and their unborn children.
