Require appropriate fencing with gated access in all ponds/lakes in Essex for child safety

My heart races every time I think about it. As a parent living in Essex, I am constantly worried about the safety of young children who have easy access to the many unfenced, deep-water areas throughout our community. It is terrifying to consider that open, unprotected bodies of water pose a grave risk of accidental drowning, particularly for our curious little ones.
According to the World Health Organization, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children aged 1 to 4 years old globally, with UK statistics reflecting similar tragic trends. While adults can typically gauge the danger, children are more vulnerable, and once they wander off, even for a moment, the outcomes can be devastating. In Essex alone, our beautiful lakes, canals, and rivers are some of the most intoxicating and tempting environments. But without proper safeguards, they remain potential hazards right in our backyards.
Parents and local communities can only do so much. This is why I urge you to support this petition demanding that all public water bodies with a certain depth in Essex be mandatorily fenced off, with gates for public access. It is imperative to implement these protective measures to prevent unnecessary accidents and ensure that our outdoor spaces remain both safe and accessible to the public.
Implementing such safety measures is not just a reactive step; it is a proactive and responsible action that reflects our commitment to safeguarding children. We need the local councils and authorities to prioritize funding and plans for installing durable, effective fencing around these areas.
