The Issue

There is a pressing issue in the Andrews Heights district. Our community is seeing a growing number of young children who are eager to start their educational journey, but many of them are finding it impossible to attend their local, neighborhood school for PreK. The issue? Andrews Heights Elementary has only one PreK classroom, despite the rising demand and the higher number of classrooms available in nearby elementary schools.

This situation is particularly troubling for local families who prioritize community involvement and wish for their children to begin their education with familiar faces and in familiar surroundings. Attending a different elementary school due to a lack of classroom space not only disrupts this experience but also places a logistical and emotional burden on families already balancing busy schedules and tight resources.

Data from the local school district indicates that the number of PreK-aged children in our area is increasing, and it's essential that our school infrastructure reflects these changes to provide equitable educational opportunities for all. Comparatively, nearby schools have accommodated this need by offering two or even three PreK classrooms, ensuring that all local children have the chance to attend the school closest to home.

By adding another PreK classroom to Andrews Heights Elementary, we can alleviate the strain on our current system, make PreK accessible to more local families, and foster a stronger sense of community. Our children deserve the chance to grow and learn close to home, surrounded by supportive peers and educators.

We urge the local school district and educational boards to take immediate action to address this disparity. By doing so, they will uphold the values of equity, community, and quality education that are so vital to our district's future.

Please join us in advocating for this necessary change. Sign this petition today to support expanding PreK education at Andrews Heights Elementary, ensuring all our children can start their educational path on the right foot, right at home. Your signature can make a difference—a better future for our children begins now.

I did review your request with Amanda Mays - Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools. She reminded me that our preschool director monitors preschool enrollment throughout the year. She looks at each of our 84 sites and makes recommendations for adding or moving programs based on current enrollment, enrollment projections, and Birth to 3 projections. Currently our data indicates all prek eligible students in the St. Albans area have a spot for enrollment. I hope this helps.
