Require all Trucks to Stop at Railroad Crossings

Require all Trucks to Stop at Railroad Crossings
The Issue
I have witnessed numerous close calls and unfortunate collisions involving trucks and large vehicles at railroad crossings, and it's alarming how often these incidents are overlooked. Under current federal law, only trucks carrying hazardous materials are required to follow strict safety procedures: they must come to a complete stop, roll down their windows, turn off audio equipment, and ensure it is clear before crossing the tracks. In my opinion, this crucial law should extend to all trucks, regardless of their size, type, or cargo.
Railroad crossings are inherently dangerous due to their unique intersection of train and road traffic. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, there were over 2,000 crossing incidents in the United States in 2022 alone, resulting in more than 200 fatalities. These statistics highlight the serious risks that come with not taking additional safety measures. Requiring all trucks to adhere to a mandatory stop would significantly reduce the potential for accidents, protect lives, and promote safer road practices.
The implementation of this requirement is not only a logical step but a necessary one given the growing frequency of collisions. Such a rule could be easily enforced with penalty systems in place similar to those for hazardous material carriers. Moreover, giving truck drivers proper training on the importance of this regulation will ensure they are fully aware of the procedures and their responsibilities when approaching railroad crossings.
It is crucial that we prioritize the safety of all road users and acknowledge the heightened risk at railroad crossings. This change could be lifesaving. I urge you to support this initiative by signing this petition to help push for the implementation of a universal rule requiring all trucks to stop at railroad crossings.
