The Issue

Two agonizing months passed while my daughter was in the hospital, fighting each day with tremendous courage. Throughout this difficult time, not once did we hear from her school to check on her well-being or offer support. It was an isolating experience, and as a parent, deeply concerning. We trust schools as partners in education and community—they should demonstrate their care, especially in challenging times.

In Lamar CISD, it's crucial to enforce a policy where all schools are required to contact families if a student is absent for a week with or without explanation. This policy would ensure that children who may be suffering from illness, bullying, or personal hardships are not overlooked. Schools have a responsibility not only to educate but to support and protect the students under their care.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, unreported absenteeism is a red flag for at-risk students, potentially indicating serious issues that require attention. A simple phone call can bridge the gap between home and school, providing insight that could alter a student's life trajectory positively.

The implementation of enforcing this policy is straightforward. Schools within the district can establish a protocol for reaching out, utilizing existing administrative resources. This would involve contacting parents or guardians after a week of explained or unexplained absence to ensure the child's safety and to offer necessary assistance or guidance.

Join this vital cause to prioritize student welfare in Lamar CISD. By turning an empathetic lens toward student absences, we can foster a community that cares and acts swiftly. Let’s urge our educational authorities to enforce this measure NOW to protect our children and show that as a community, we are truly invested in their futures.

Sign this petition to help enact this change for the safety and health of our children. Let’s make it known that no child should be left unnoticed.
