Require All Retailers to Clearly Display Prices—No More Hidden Costs Behind Barcodes

The Issue

Retailers Are Hiding Prices—Let’s Put a Stop to It

Across the country—especially in gas station convenience stores—retailers are increasingly hiding prices behind barcodes, instead of using clear price tags. In many cases, there’s no price on the item, no sign on the shelf, and no way to know how much something costs unless you have a smartphone or ask the cashier to scan it for you. Often, there isn’t even a working app or scanner available.

This is not a small issue. It’s a growing trend that hurts consumers and erodes trust. It forces people to guess what they’re being charged—and it’s happening at a time when prices are already high, and budgeting is more important than ever.

We, the undersigned, believe every American has a basic right to see the price of a product before deciding to buy it. No guessing. No surprise charges. No games.

This deceptive practice hurts:

• Seniors and low-income individuals who may not own or use smartphones.

• Rural and underserved communities with limited store options.

• Travelers and commuters who rely on quick stops for essentials.

• Anyone trying to manage a budget or avoid being overcharged.

With inflation and price-gouging already a concern, burying prices behind barcodes is unacceptable.

We’re calling for action:

• The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) must recognize and stop this as a deceptive retail practice.

• Congress must pass a law requiring all retailers to clearly display prices—on the item, the shelf, or with clear signage—without requiring technology or assistance.

• State Attorneys General must investigate and hold retailers accountable under existing consumer protection laws.

Price transparency is a right—not a privilege. Join us in demanding fairness, honesty, and respect for everyday shoppers. Sign this petition to make visible pricing a national standard.
