As a dedicated personal trainer, I've witnessed firsthand the impact of unrealistic beauty standards perpetuated through social media, especially on platforms like Instagram. The pervasive use of editing tools and artificial intelligence by influencers to alter their appearance in photos and videos sets an unattainable benchmark for both young women and men. This is more than just editing the lighting and adding a bit more colour. This widespread practice is damaging a generation, instilling a false belief in individuals that their bodies must conform to an unrealistic ideal.

This petition covers anything edited to sell a product or device, or being any type of influencer. From fitness influencers editing their waist size, to beauticians editing blemishes off their clients faces, the truth should be disclosed on all posts. 

A global health report stated that over 70% of teenagers have expressed dissatisfaction with their body image after engaging with social media platforms. This needs to change, and the first step is transparency. Understanding the truth behind these glossy images can recalibrate how society views beauty, helping to foster a community that values authenticity over artificial perfection.

Many countries have already started taking action. For instance, Norway implemented a law requiring influencers to disclose when a photo is retouched. However, Instagram operates on a global scale, and we must strive for worldwide transparency to truly make a difference. By requiring influencers everywhere to disclose their use of editing and AI, we can help individuals, especially impressionable youth, develop a healthier relationship with their bodies.

This petition calls upon Instagram and parent company Meta to implement mandatory disclosure policies for all influencers using extreme editing and AI tools to modify their appearance. The goal is to cultivate honesty and authenticity, redirecting the focus towards self-love and genuine representation. These policies should be complemented by educational resources that inform users about the influence of edited content on mental health.
