The American people deserve a government that operates with transparency, integrity, and accountability.
Today, technology has advanced to a point where artificial intelligence can help document activity, maintain records, and provide greater oversight of government operations. We are calling on local, state, and federal elected officials to explore implementing AI-assisted camera systems in government offices where public business is conducted.
These systems could:
• Record official government meetings and public interactions.
• Create searchable transcripts of discussions and decisions.
• Provide secure archival records for public transparency requests.
• Detect potential violations of ethics rules, records retention policies, or public meeting requirements.
• Reduce disputes about what was said or agreed upon.
• Increase public confidence in government institutions.
To protect privacy and national security, any implementation should include:
• Clear limits on where cameras may be used.
• Protection of confidential constituent communications.
• Exemptions for classified and legally protected discussions.
• Independent oversight and auditing of AI systems.
• Public disclosure of how recordings and data are stored and used.
Government employees and elected officials routinely ask citizens to trust them with significant authority and taxpayer resources. Greater transparency can strengthen that trust and help ensure decisions are made in the public’s best interest.
We respectfully call upon Congress, state legislatures, governors, county commissioners, mayors, and other public officials to study and implement AI-assisted transparency systems in government offices where public business is conducted.
The public deserves greater visibility into how decisions are made and how elected officials conduct the people’s business.
