The Issue

AI data centers are often powered by nonrenewable energy sources such as coal, oil, or natural gas. This releases a dangerous amount of pollutants into the atmosphere, putting humans and wildlife at risk. High exposure to these pollutants can lead to severe health issues, including respiratory irritation and even lung cancer. According to PBS News, it is predicted that by 2030, the world's AI data centers will produce almost 440 million tons of carbon dioxide.

The expansion of AI in Ohio means that more data centers are emerging, which increases the demand for energy. Many of these centers rely on fossil fuels, which contributes significantly to air pollution and climate change. In a time of extreme environmental challenges, it's crucial that we transition away from fossil fuels and toward more sustainable energy solutions.

Solar energy presents a feasible and more sustainable alternative. In capturing the power of the sun, we can reduce the carbon footprint of AI data centers. Ohio has high a potential for solar energy production because of its geographic position and abundant sunlight.  By implementing solar power in AI infrastructure, we can not only protect the environment, but also create more jobs in the renewable energy sector. This will therefore drive economic growth.

Requiring that future AI data centers built in Ohio use solar energy, is a positive step towards a more sustainable world. Such a mandate would not only lower greenhouse gas emissions but also pave the way for more environmentally responsible innovation. With the support of the Ohio State Legislature and public backing, this shift can be a bold example of how technology and innovation don't have to be unsustainable.

The health of our planet, wildlife, and humankind depends on decisive action now. Let's urge Ohio's lawmakers to take a step forward and require solar energy usage for new AI data centers.
