Require Adult-Sized Changing Tables in Public Restrooms for Individuals with Disabilities

Require Adult-Sized Changing Tables in Public Restrooms for Individuals with Disabilities
The Issue
As a parent of a disabled child, I am asking our community and leaders to address a serious and often overlooked accessibility issue.
My son weighs 60 pounds and, like many individuals with disabilities, he cannot safely use standard baby changing tables. These tables are not designed for older children or adults who require assistance with personal care. When we are out in public, I am often left with no safe or dignified option.
There have been times when I’ve had to place him on a changing table that is far too small, holding him up with one knee while trying to change him and prevent him from falling. It’s stressful, unsafe, and unfair—for both of us. No parent or caregiver should have to risk their child’s safety or dignity just to meet a basic need.
Many families like mine are forced to change their loved ones on restroom floors, in vehicles, or avoid public outings altogether. This is not accessibility. This is exclusion.
While the Americans with Disabilities Act has made important strides in accessibility, it does not currently require adult-sized changing tables in public facilities. This leaves a significant gap for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers.
We are asking for change.
We urge local and state leaders to:
Require adult-sized, height-adjustable changing tables in public restrooms
Include these requirements in all new construction and major renovations of public facilities
Ensure that spaces are safe, sanitary, and provide privacy for users and caregivers
Accessible restrooms should serve everyone—not just those who fit within outdated standards.
This is about dignity.
This is about safety.
This is about inclusion.
Please support this petition and help make our community more accessible for all families.
