Require a Data Center Moratorium in Wrightstown Before Any Proposal Moves Forward
The Issue
Residents of Wrightstown, Wisconsin are asking the Village Board to pause all data center development discussions and pass a temporary moratorium — before any formal proposal is approved, any land is rezoned, and any farmland is lost for good.
Here's why this matters right now: open-records emails show that Wrightstown village officials have been in talks with Cloverleaf Infrastructure — a data center development company — since January 2026. Yet officials told residents at a public listening session on May 19 that "there is no proposal in front of us." The company has already provided Wrightstown with annexation, zoning, and pre-development agreement templates based on its Port Washington project, where a hyperscale data center is currently under construction.
Residents deserve more than listening sessions held after the groundwork is already being laid. They deserve time to study the real impacts, review what happened in Port Washington, and decide together whether this is the future they want for their community.
Other local governments in the region have already acted. Manitowoc County passed an 18-month moratorium on data center permitting. Three northeast Wisconsin towns called for a one-year pause. These communities recognized that once farmland is rezoned and development agreements are signed, there's no going back. As Wrightstown resident Roland Schmidt said at the May 19 meeting: "Farmland will never go back to farmland. Period."
A moratorium isn't a permanent "no." It's a demand for a fair, transparent process — one where residents have real information and real time to weigh in before any decision is made. Village Board President Dean Erickson and the full Wrightstown Village Board have the authority to pass one now.
We're calling on the Wrightstown Village Board to immediately adopt a temporary moratorium on all data center permitting, rezoning, and pre-development agreements — and to commit to a full, public process before any proposal moves forward.
