Request TxDOT to extend and amend crosswalk art policy

Request TxDOT to extend and amend crosswalk art policy
The Issue
Living in the Crossroads area in Texas for the past five years, I have witnessed the city flourish with vibrant murals and crosswalk art. I grew up in Victoria, and art was always something you do for fun but never encouraged to be a career possibility. This artistry does more than just beautify our streets; it inspires our community, attracts tourists, and stimulates job creation. Local nonprofits have united to nurture this cultural tapestry that has brought life and color to our city. It has become an integral part of Victoria's identity, turning our town into a canvas of creativity and unity.
Recently, however, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has mandated the removal of crosswalk art, setting our community on a backward trajectory. This decision threatens not only our local culture but also the economic benefits derived from our city's unique artistic flair.
We are asking TxDOT to reconsider its directive and grant Victoria an extension to halt the removal of our beloved crosswalk art. Furthermore, we propose an exemption for special districts, such as entertainment or arts & cultural districts, where this kind of visual enhancement is crucial. These areas, vital to our city’s charm and economic vitality, deserve particular consideration when it comes to such regulations. We have NOT seen an increase of traffic accidents because of this artwork.
The decision regarding crosswalk art should rest with the Victoria City Council rather than being imposed at the state level. Our city officials understand the local pulse and the significance of art in our community. Their decisions would be better reflective of our community's unique needs and aspirations.
Join me in urging TxDOT to provide Victoria the autonomy to cherish and cultivate its artistic identity. Sign this petition today to support local culture, economy, and the decision-making power of our city council.
PLEASE NOTE: I (Claire Santellana) did not help in implementing, painting or design concepts of the Victoria, TX crosswalks in any way. I just stand behind local artists and the growing artistic community in VTX.
