Silverado Park in Long Beach is home to four dedicated pickleball courts that are heavily used by the growing local pickleball community.  As participation continues to increase, players often face limited court availability and longer wait times.

At the same time, Silverado Park has three tennis courts, with one currently not being utilized.

We are asking the City of Long Beach to evaluate converting the currently unused tennis court into up to four dedicated pickleball courts.

Our Proposal

The proposed conversion would:

• Add up to 4 dedicated pickleball courts
• Increase dedicated pickleball courts at Silverado Park from 4 to as many as 8
• Keep the remaining 2 tennis courts available for tennis players
• Make better use of existing recreational space
• Provide additional recreational opportunities for the community

A single tennis court can potentially accommodate up to four pickleball courts, depending on site dimensions, setbacks, fencing, access, and other design considerations. The City would determine the appropriate number and configuration based on the site’s feasibility.

Current vs. Proposed

Current: 4 dedicated pickleball courts + 3 tennis courts

Proposed: 4 existing pickleball courts + up to 4 additional pickleball courts + 2 tennis courts

This proposal would potentially increase Silverado Park’s dedicated pickleball capacity from 4 courts to as many as 8, while retaining tennis access at the park.

Why This Matters

Pickleball continues to grow as a recreational activity for people of all ages. Additional dedicated courts would provide more opportunities for residents to stay active, socialize, participate in organized play, take lessons, and compete in leagues and tournaments.

Increasing the number of dedicated courts could also help reduce wait times and court congestion while allowing tennis and pickleball players to enjoy their respective spaces with fewer conflicts.

A Community-Focused Solution

This proposal is not about taking recreational opportunities away from tennis players. We recognize the importance of tennis and are proposing the conversion of a court that is currently not being utilized, while keeping the remaining tennis courts available.

Instead, we are asking the City to evaluate whether this existing recreational space can be put to better use by addressing the growing demand for pickleball.

We respectfully ask the City of Long Beach and the appropriate Parks and Recreation officials to evaluate:

• Current court usage
• Community demand for pickleball
• Site feasibility and design requirements
• Potential construction and maintenance costs
• The potential impact on both tennis and pickleball users
