The Issue

As students of ACVI, we urge our school administration to reconsider the current policy which prohibits us from remaining in our cars during lunch and spare periods. This seemingly minor policy has a significant impact on our daily lives and requires attention.

Our school is bustling and often overcrowded, with limited spaces for students to relax and enjoy their breaks. The cafeteria and common areas can become overwhelmingly noisy and crowded. For many of us, sitting in our cars during lunch or spare periods provides a much-needed break from the chaos, offering a personal space to relax, eat peacefully, listen to music, or even catch up on homework without the constant noise and distractions surrounding us.

The school parking lot should be a space of convenience, allowing students to use their vehicles during non-instructional time. However, with the current rule in place, any student found sitting in their car is reprimanded and forced back inside. This has turned what should be a simple, harmless activity into an unnecessary issue.

We understand that this restriction is included in the student handbook, and we recognize that school rules are important. However, we believe there should be some consistency in how handbook expectations are enforced. For example, the handbook also outlines expectations regarding hanging jackets in lockers, yet this is not an expectation that is consistently enforced. Many students do not even have lockers to use in the first place. This raises a reasonable question: why is the rule about sitting in our own cars during lunch and spare periods being enforced so strictly when other handbook expectations are not? We are not asking for all school rules to be ignored, but rather for administration to reconsider whether this particular restriction is necessary and whether a more flexible approach could be taken.

Having access to a quiet, personal space during breaks can support student well-being, reduce stress, and provide an opportunity to recharge before returning to class. Allowing students to use their cars during non-instructional periods could help address the lack of comfortable, quiet spaces available in an overcrowded school environment. Our request is reasonable, especially considering the demands and pressures students face throughout the school day.

Potential solutions could include implementing a pass system to monitor and regulate the number of students in the parking lot at any given time. This would help maintain safety and order while giving students the flexibility they need.

We understand that there are reasons behind current policies, particularly those related to safety and security. However, we believe that with appropriate measures, such as clear guidelines, increased monitoring, or periodic security checks by staff, these concerns could be addressed while still allowing students to remain in their vehicles during lunch and spare periods.

We urge our principals and school administration to have an open dialogue with students about this policy, listen to our concerns, and seriously consider our suggestions. Students should have a voice in decisions that directly affect their daily school experience. Let’s work together to create an environment that supports student well-being and acknowledges our needs.

Please join us in signing this petition to respectfully ask ACVI’s administration to reconsider and amend the current policy. Your support will help us advocate for a more comfortable and accommodating school environment during lunch and spare periods, positively impacting our daily school lives and overall well-being.
