The issue
I’m deeply concerned about the potential health risks posed by the increased burning of Refuse Derived Fuels (RDF) and plastics in industrial processes. We currently lack comprehensive understanding of the pollutants released into the air, and consequently, their impact on the health of surrounding communities. Specifically, at the Adelaide Brighton Cement site, this practice has intensified, yet we are uncertain about the adequacy of current monitoring measures.
While RDF offers a waste-to-energy solution—a seemingly beneficial approach in addressing waste management—the higher plastic content in these fuels could be releasing harmful toxins into the air, which we are then breathing. Are the pollutants currently being measured truly the only ones of concern, or is there more lurking unseen that could impact our long-term health?
This uncertainty necessitates a call for rigorous and independent research to be conducted. There is an urgent need to identify and monitor all potential harmful emissions resulting from burning RDF and plastics. Only through thorough scientific inquiry can we grasp the full scope of the effects on air quality and public health.
Moreover, while we push for more research, immediate action must be taken to safeguard public health. We urge the residents, stakeholders, and authorities to support the call for a temporary suspension of the transition until the current trial at Adelaide Brighton Cement can be verified by independent parties. This pause will allow sufficient time for research to be conducted thoroughly and provide clarity on health impacts.
