The Issue

We, the parents of students across Sachem’s elementary schools, are deeply concerned about the recent decisions that have increased class sizes.

Historically, elementary classrooms have remained below the district’s increased target size, allowing teachers to provide the individualized support each child needs to succeed. This year, however, class sizes have grown significantly, with the very real possibility of becoming even larger next year as the district works on redistricting.

We believe that these inflated class sizes that are now reaching the growing target size level, will directly harm our children’s education. When classrooms reach nearly 30 students, even the most talented and dedicated teachers cannot provide the same level of instruction, care, and attention to each child. Oversized classrooms threaten the foundation of learning and risk undoing years of progress.

This decision does not set our children up for success, it sets them back. These setbacks could follow students into secondary school, requiring additional support from the district to help them catch up.

Update – September 4, 2025

This issue is no longer limited to elementary schools. Parents and students across Sachem’s middle and high schools are now experiencing the same challenges, with some classes exceeding 30 students this year. This reinforces our concern that oversized classrooms are becoming the norm across the district.

The need for action is urgent. When classes reach these numbers, teachers cannot provide the individualized instruction and support our children deserve—whether they are in elementary, middle, or high school. These conditions compromise both academic success and student well-being at every level.

We respectfully urge the district to:

  • Revisit the elementary school target class sizes and prioritize solutions that maintain manageable class sizes.
  • Revisit target class sizes at Middle and High School levels and prioritize solutions that maintain manageable class size
  •  Ensure that the quality of education and the well-being of students remain at the center of every decision.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in an environment where their needs are met and their potential can flourish. We urge the district to act immediately to protect our students’ education, confidence, and future by reducing the class sizes to manageable numbers.
