Request for immediate measures to reduce the weight of school bags
The Issue
We, the concerned parents, wish to draw your attention to an issue that directly affects the health and well-being of our children—the excessive weight of school bags.
The Government of West Bengal and Centre has clearly directed that a student's school bag should not exceed 10% of the child's body weight. This guideline has been issued after medical experts highlighted the growing incidence of back pain, poor posture, neck strain, shoulder injuries, and even long-term spinal problems among school-going children caused by carrying heavy school bags.
Despite these guidelines, many students continue to carry bags that far exceed the prescribed limit. This is becoming a serious health concern, particularly for young children whose bones and muscles are still developing.
We respectfully request the school administration to take immediate steps to ensure compliance with the government's directive by:
Conducting regular checks on the weight of students' school bags.
Preparing timetables that minimize the number of books required each day.
Encouraging the use of notebooks with separate sections or slimmer notebooks wherever feasible.
Providing lockers or storage facilities, wherever possible.
Ensuring that teachers avoid asking students to carry unnecessary books and materials.
Creating awareness among teachers, parents, and students regarding the prescribed bag-weight norms.
Our intention is not to criticize the school but to work together in safeguarding the physical health of our children. A child's education should never come at the cost of their health.
We sincerely hope the school will take proactive steps to implement these measures and ensure that every child can learn in a safe and healthy environment.
Yours sincerely,
Concerned Parents
