We, the undersigned residents of Fruitvale Circle, Haymarket Road, Backwater Trail, Goulston Street, Angelfish Road, Keith Monkman Way, Keith Monkman Park and Clockwork Drive in Brampton, are writing to express our serious concerns regarding the rise in criminal activity in our neighbourhood. Recently, we have witnessed multiple incidents, including carjackings and robberies, which have severely impacted our safety, mental well-being, and sense of community.
The most worrying part is the safety of our children. These crimes have scared them, making families afraid to let their kids play outside or walk around freely. This fear is ruining our quality of life.
To protect ourselves, we have hired a private security guard to patrol from midnight to 6:00 a.m. However, paying for this service is putting financial pressure on families who just want to feel safe in their own homes.
We know the City has been working on safety by using speed cameras for traffic control. But there are no surveillance cameras focused on stopping crime. Installing cameras that can scan license plates would help identify criminals. A panic alarm system, like the ones used in gas stations, would also be useful. Since these robberies happen very fast, victims often don’t have time to call 911. A quick emergency button could help police respond faster and even stop some crimes before they happen.
It feels like the City prioritizes making money through fines and speed cameras instead of focusing on the safety of its residents. We are formally requesting that the City of Brampton and all relevant levels of government take immediate and concrete action. Specifically, we seek the following:
- Acknowledgement of the recent criminal activity in our community and its impact on residents.
- Increased police presence or dedicated patrol units during overnight hours to deter future incidents.
- Financial support or reimbursement for the ongoing costs of hiring private security until permanent public safety solutions are enacted.
- Implementation of preventative safety measures, including street surveillance systems, improved street lighting, and bylaw enforcement to address loitering and suspicious behaviour.
We are hardworking, law-abiding residents who deserve to feel safe in our homes and streets. We need urgent support from municipal, provincial, and federal leaders.
We request a formal response to this letter and would like to meet to discuss long-term solutions.
Examples of recent incidents in the neighbourhood.
1. A resident of 74 Quillberry Close, Brampton, endured two break-ins within weeks. During the first attack, armed robbers brutally assaulted him in front of his children, using violence to coerce his wife into handing over their cash and gold. Traumatized and fearing for his family's safety, he abandoned his newly purchased home and relocated to a condo in Mississauga, as condos these robbers cannot enter. Despite repeatedly requesting updates from the police regarding the suspects and their arrests, he ultimately gave up hope, as authorities failed to provide any information about the investigation.
2. At 12 Fruitvale Circle, robbers tried to break in by smashing the door with a hammer. The homeowners woke up from the noise, ran to the front door, and shouted to scare them off. The next night, around 1 a.m., the same robbers returned but failed again because the residents were alert, traumatized from the incident that had happened the night before.
3. There are many examples of such incidents, which can be easily viewed on the Peel Police site by location. Click here to see crime reports in our neighbourhood https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/6eb9c3c452c34ce2b19821de0f6eb775/
This is the level of stress and unsafe people feel these days.
