United for a Safer Hacienda Heights: Improved Management of Motel 6 Homeless Center

The Issue

Hacienda Heights Chinese American Association invites you to join us in opposing the proposal to turn Motel 6 at 1172 S 7th Avenue into a permanent homeless shelter, regardless of residents' opinions. President Daivd Fang, Vice President Kenny Chang, along with the residents of Hacienda Heights, urge the government to provide more comprehensive support before converting the temporary homeless center into a permanent facility. Please sign and share this petition with others.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Los Angeles County government changed Motel 6 into a temporary shelter for the homeless as part of the Homekey Project. However, residents of Hacienda Heights have seen a dramatic increase in the number of nude or mentally ill transients, urine on public sidewalks, abandoned needles, tents, and more. Now the county plans to turn the temporary homeless shelter into a permanent one, despite the adverse opinions of local residents. This move will significantly impact the community's safety and the residents' quality of life.

Currently, there are many unanswered questions and concerns regarding the operation of this center, such as the impact on public safety, potential overcrowding, and the availability of resources to assist the homeless population. Therefore, we want to urge the government to conduct a thorough planning process to address these concerns before making any permanent changes to the center's operation. We require the proposal to contain the following information:

  • A plan that prioritizes public safety, including an increase in police presence around the facility and other protections to minimize the negative impact on local residents.
  • Establishing eligibility criteria for homeless individuals to apply for residency, including drug tests and criminal background checks.
  • Ensuring the management team inside the center can provide the necessary assistance.
  • Setting a transitional period before turning Motel 6 into a permanent homeless shelter so that residents can review and evaluate the changes and improvement, before it is settled.

In addition to signing the petition, we encourage you to attend the public hearing on May 4th, 2023, from 6-7 pm to voice your concerns in person. The meeting will be held at the Hacienda Heights Community Center (1234 Valencia Ave., Hacienda Heights). Your presence at the hearing will show the government that we are a united community and demand to be involved in the planning process. We need to protect our rights and ensure that our voices are heard!
