Request for a Safe and Dignified Play Space
The Issue
For years, I have dedicated my life and career to serving children and individuals with Autism and other special needs. The children we serve at Bloom are extraordinary, and they deserve a place where they can play, learn, and build meaningful skills safely and with dignity.
Bloom Behavioral Solutions has repeatedly expressed interest in renting additional units within our shopping center. Those units would have allowed us to build an indoor playground specifically designed for the children in our care. Despite these requests, our landlord denied us consideration for available units and leased those spaces to other businesses.
Because we were not given the opportunity to expand, our children must currently use an outdoor area that remains accessible to the general public. Many of the children we serve have limited safety awareness and may engage in elopement, meaning they can suddenly run or wander away from their caregivers or clinical team. An open, publicly accessible area does not provide the privacy, security, or protection these children need.
We are asking our landlord to allow us to enclose our existing outdoor space so that it can be completely designated for the children we serve. This enclosure would create a private and secure area where children with Autism and other special needs can play, exercise, socialize, and practice important developmental skills without exposure to public traffic or the constant risk of elopement.
We are not asking for something extravagant. We are asking for permission to make our existing space safer for a vulnerable population of children. A secure outdoor area would support their physical safety, emotional well-being, independence, and ability to participate more fully in treatment.
Bloom has proudly served families in this community since 2012, including military families, veterans, and children with disabilities. We have worked hard to be responsible tenants and meaningful contributors to the Atlantic Beach community. These children deserve an environment created with their needs in mind—not a shared public space that places them at unnecessary risk.
By signing this petition, you are asking our landlord to support Bloom’s efforts to enclose our current outdoor space and create a private, secure play area exclusively for children with Autism and other special needs.
