Request FFMHA A-level hockey be maintained as a central priority in all planning decisions

The Issue

We, the undersigned, are requesting that the introduction of AAA and all operations of AA teams be structured in a way that ensures A-level (house league) hockey remains accessible, sustainable, and a priority within our district.

Our concern is that without careful planning, the expansion of higher-level teams may unintentionally place strain on the player base that supports A-level hockey.

Specifically, we are concerned that:

 • Increasing the number of higher-tier teams may draw too heavily from the existing player pool, reducing participation at the A-level.

 • A decline in A-level registration could make it difficult to form balanced teams and sustain meaningful league play.

 • This challenge is further compounded by neighbouring centres, such as Emo, fielding their own dedicated AA teams.

 • Our district may not currently have the numbers required to support multiple competitive tiers without impacting the strength and viability of foundational programs.

If A-level opportunities are diminished, we contribute to a broader trend in which hockey becomes increasingly inaccessible—effectively limiting participation to families who can afford higher-cost, “pay-to-play” pathways.

We believe that A-level hockey is essential to the long-term health of the sport in our community. It provides the most accessible entry point for players and families, supports skill development, and ensures broad participation.

We respectfully request that:

 • Any expansion of AAA and operation of AA programming be carefully evaluated against overall player numbers.

 • A-level hockey be maintained as a central priority in all planning decisions.

 • Program structures be designed to support long-term sustainability across all levels, without compromising accessibility at the A-level.
