The Problem

Bengaluru has largely replaced public dustbins with door to door garbage collection. While this system works well for many households, it does not work for everyone.

Many residents work night shifts, leave home early for work, have irregular schedules, or are simply away from home when the garbage vehicle arrives. Collection timings are not always fixed, making it difficult for many people to plan around them. If the vehicle is missed, there is often no official or practical way to dispose of regular household waste until the next collection.

I personally work the night shift and usually sleep around 5 AM. Staying awake for several more hours every day just to wait for the garbage vehicle is not practical. I live in an individual house without apartment staff who can hand over the garbage on my behalf. Leaving garbage outside is also not an option because stray dogs, cats, and cows often tear open the bags, scattering waste across the street.

Some people suggest paying the garbage collector extra or asking neighbours for help. While these arrangements may work for a few households, they are informal, inconsistent, and depend entirely on individual circumstances. Access to a basic municipal service should not depend on personal arrangements or additional payments.

This issue affects many more people than just night shift workers. It also affects residents who leave early for work, healthcare workers, emergency service personnel, people with unpredictable schedules, senior citizens, and anyone who simply misses the garbage vehicle.

Without a proper alternative, residents are often forced to keep garbage inside their homes until the next day or dispose of it illegally. Illegal dumping not only makes the city dirtier but also leads to garbage being burned at unofficial dumping spots, contributing to air pollution and health hazards.

What We Are Requesting

We respectfully request BBMP to provide an official alternative for residents who miss door to door garbage collection.

This could be achieved by:

Installing well maintained community dustbins at suitable locations, or
Establishing community waste collection points where residents can drop off their household waste during convenient hours.
The exact solution can be decided by BBMP based on what is most practical for each locality.

Why This Matters

This petition is not against door to door garbage collection. We support the existing system and appreciate the effort that goes into keeping Bengaluru clean.

We are simply requesting that BBMP address an important gap in the current system by providing an accessible backup option for residents who genuinely cannot hand over their waste when the collection vehicle arrives.

Every resident deserves a legal, convenient, and hygienic way to dispose of household waste. We urge BBMP to consider this request and make Bengaluru's waste management system more inclusive for everyone.
