I would like to thank you all one last time for your support. Although still an important issue, the spate of recent developments surrounding the crisis has thankfully resulted in public outcries for more direct action all over Europe. I will not be shutting down this petition however, so that people can continue to sign if they wish and remind the BBC that there are many thousands of people out there who recognise the power of words or who are appalled at the way the BBC has presented the crisis.
We have seen some progress though. Despite the fact that the BBC continue to refer to the crisis as a Migrant Crisis, they are referring to the people themselves more and more often as refugees. Fortunately other news sources, such as The Independent and The Guardian, have become more courageous and responsible in their reporting. So although the aim of the petition was partly to put pressure on the BBC to take the lead, looks like they will just have to follow.
I, like so many others, was torn to pieces when I saw those images of little Alyan Kurdi face down on that beach. I have a son around his age. But not everyone appears to have been moved in the same way. Discussions have been raging on social media between those calling for more help and those opposed to allowing any more 'immigrants' into their country, with some extremely racist and hateful views being expressed almost exclusively from those opposed to giving any kind of help. It goes without saying that both sides need to be heard and their opinions respected, that is the essence of democratic debate, but opinions need to be backed up by valid arguments and not racism or abuse. I will be starting a new campaign to raise awareness that publicly inciting racial hatred is a crime which carries a possible prison sentence – it may not be possible to appeal to some people’s morality but maybe by reminding them that there could be legal consequences, it might be possible to curb some of the racial hatred we have seen on public display.
