We, the residents and road users, are calling for an urgent and comprehensive review of the safety of the A17 staggered junction serving Brant Broughton and Stragglethorpe.

The junction is a vital access point for residents travelling to and from Brant Broughton and Stragglethorpe, but it requires local traffic to negotiate a staggered crossroads with the A17, a major and heavily used strategic route carrying significant volumes of fast-moving traffic, including HGVs.

For many residents, using or exiting the junction can be difficult and feels increasingly unsafe, particularly during peak periods when traffic on the A17 is heavy.

Residents regularly experience difficulty finding a safe opportunity to enter or cross the A17, particularly when traffic is travelling at speed in both directions. The staggered layout can make judging gaps and safely completing manoeuvres difficult, while queues and periods of heavy traffic can further increase frustration and risk.

These concerns are not limited to a single recent incident. There is a longstanding history of concern about the safety of the A17 in the Brant Broughton area.

Evidence already available

Information previously provided by Lincolnshire County Council and recorded by a neighbouring parish council identified 31 injury collisions over a five-year period on the A17 section extending up to and including the Brant Broughton crossroads and continuing towards the B6403 junction near Cranwell. Five of those collisions involved HGVs.

We recognise that this figure relates to a wider section of the A17 and does not mean that all 31 collisions occurred at the Brant Broughton junction itself. However, it demonstrates the significant collision history of the surrounding A17 corridor.

There have also been a number of serious and fatal collisions on the A17 in the immediate area in recent years. Including but not limited to:

In November 2024, a fatal collision occurred on the A17 between Brant Broughton and Leadenham.

On 10 January 2025, a further collision between a tanker HGV and a van on the A17 between Brant Broughton and Leadenham resulted in two fatalities.

On 17 August 2026, a further fatal collision occurred on the A17 between Brant Broughton and Beckingham, involving a DAF HGV and a Volkswagen Golf. The driver of the Golf, a man in his 20s, sadly died at the scene.

These incidents did not all occur at the crossroads itself, and we do not claim that they were caused by the junction. However, they demonstrate the serious consequences that collisions on this section of the A17 can have and reinforce the need to consider the safety of the junction within the context of the wider A17 corridor.

The Brant Broughton junction has also previously been described as a dangerous junction where several serious accidents have occurred in documentation submitted during the planning process for a Solar Panel development in the area.

The Parish Council has itself repeatedly recorded and discussed accidents and safety concerns relating to the A17.

Residents believe further investigation is necessary.

The evidence currently available may not represent the full extent of the problem.

Official collision statistics record collisions which have occurred, but they cannot record every near-miss, difficulty entering the A17, emergency braking incident or occasion when a driver has been unable to safely find a gap in traffic.

These are experiences which local residents encounter when using the junction regularly.

We therefore believe that the concerns of residents should be considered alongside the official collision data.

We also believe that the full and most up-to-date collision, traffic and speed data for the junction and surrounding section of the A17 should be obtained and examined before any conclusion is reached about whether the existing arrangement remains suitable.

We therefore call for:

1. A formal road-safety assessment of the A17 Brant Broughton / Stragglethorpe staggered junction and its immediate approaches.
2. A review of the complete available collision history for the junction and surrounding A17 corridor, including serious and fatal collisions, over at least the last five years and preferably a longer historical period where data is available.
3. Current traffic-flow and vehicle-speed data to be obtained, including consideration of HGV movements and peak-period traffic.
4. An assessment of the junction layout, visibility, sight lines, road markings, signage, lighting, turning movements and the ability of vehicles to safely enter, leave and cross the A17.
5. Consideration of near-misses and the experiences of local residents and regular users, which may not be reflected in official collision statistics.
6. An assessment of whether the current staggered junction remains appropriate for the present level and nature of traffic using the A17.
7. Consideration of all appropriate solutions, including junction redesign, a roundabout or other engineering measures, improved signage and markings, lighting, speed-management measures, visibility improvements or other measures identified by the safety assessment.
8. A written response setting out the findings of the assessment and identifying what action, if any, will be taken.

We are not asking for a predetermined solution. We are asking for the junction to be properly investigated.

Residents should not have to wait for another serious or fatal collision before the safety of a junction which they use every day is properly examined.

We therefore ask Brant Broughton & Stragglethorpe Parish Council to support this petition, formally raise the concerns with Lincolnshire County Council and the relevant highway authority, and seek a comprehensive review of the A17 Brant Broughton / Stragglethorpe junction.
