The Issue

For many retired members of the Lakeland Police Department, the reality of living off of retirement benefits set decades ago is becoming increasingly untenable. Post-retirement, our dedicated officers, who spent their careers ensuring public safety, are left grappling with financial instability caused by stagnant benefits that do not account for inflation or the rising cost of living in Lakeland, Florida.

Due to the absence of an annual Cost of Living Allowance (COLA), these retired officers face financial challenges that undermine decades of service and dedication. The cost of essentials such as housing, healthcare, and everyday needs continues to climb, leaving many of our retirees with limited options and an urgent need for economic relief.

The implementation of an annual COLA for sworn retired members of the Lakeland Police Department is a necessary measure to ensure these individuals can maintain a dignified quality of life. By ensuring benefits are adjusted annually in accordance with inflation rates and living costs, we honor their service and safeguard them against financial insecurity.

Statistics show that without COLA adjustments, retirees can lose significant purchasing power over the years—placing them at risk for economic hardship. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average inflation rate over the past decade has been about 1.8% annually. This directly impacts the financial health of retired officers who rely on fixed incomes that do not currently adjust with these economic changes.

We are calling on the City of Lakeland and policy makers to implement a systematic approach for annual COLA adjustments for our retired officers. By incorporating these changes, we can provide assurance and financial stability to those who have given so much to their community.

Please sign this petition to urge local leaders to take immediate action in providing equitable retirement benefits that reflect the true cost of living, ensuring the well-being and respect for our retired law enforcement community.
