On the 4th of September 2026, my daughter endured a life-altering incident—she was hit by a car while crossing the zebra crossing at the roundabout next to Churchill Community College in Wallsend, Newcastle. This crossing is perilously situated on a slip road leading to the Coast Road, making it a common site for speeding as drivers try to match the flow on the main road. My daughter is lucky to be alive but has suffered significant brain bleedsall over her brain, loss of speech, and struggles with her memory and emotions. Her recovery is ongoing, and the emotional and physical toll on our family is unimaginable.
This hazardous crossing is not an isolated problem but a sign of a systemic safety issue that affects the entirety of our community. The roundabout near to Churchill Community College is a known accident hotspot, especially for children who traverse it daily. According to local reports, there have been numerous incidents involving children being hit by vehicles at this very spot. We must urgently address this danger zone to safeguard other children from suffering similar fates.
While the local council has acknowledged the problem, they have made it clear that any corrective measures, including the installation of red traffic lights, depend on external funding. This lack of initiative to allocate funds towards basic road safety is deeply troubling and clearly shows where their priorities lie—money over child safety.
