Replace the penny with a 15 cent coin

The Issue

Having worked at a grocery store as a cashier, I've often found myself thinking, "I wish there was a 15 cent coin." The amount of time spent handling small change, particularly those cumbersome pennies, could be greatly reduced if we simply introduced a more practical coin. When I heard that the United States government was planning to phase out the penny without introducing a new coin to take its place, I thought, "Fine! I'll do it myself..."

With the announcement that the penny might be leaving circulation, we stand at a pivotal moment to rethink our coinage system. The penny, with its declining practical value and high production cost, has long been a subject of debate. The introduction of a 15 cent coin could be the optimal solution for modernizing our currency. This new coin would not only fill the gap left by the penny but also improve efficiency in day-to-day transactions.

According to recent data from the U.S. Mint, it cost 2.06 cents to produce each penny in 2023, which means eliminating the penny could greatly cut down government expenditure. However, doing so without creating an alternative could lead to inconveniences for consumers and retailers alike. Many other countries, such as Canada and Australia, have already taken steps to eliminate their lowest denomination coins, and their economies have not suffered as a result.

A 15 cent coin presents many benefits; it would simplify cash transactions, making it easier to provide exact change without handing over handfuls of coins. Additionally, this coin would serve as a perfect intermediate denomination, reducing the need for multiple smaller coins in circulation. This could ultimately contribute to a reduction in metal usage and production costs, benefitting both the environment and the economy over time.

I urge the U.S. government to consider this proposal and conduct a study into the feasibility and benefits of introducing a 15 cent coin as a replacement for the penny. This change offers a chance to innovate and optimize our currency system for the better. Join me in advocating for the 15 cent coin to ensure we have a say in improving our monetary system in a practical and forward-thinking manner.
