The Issue

Johnson County families deserve a child abuse center that is free from politics, conflicts of interest, and divided loyalties. But right now, that is not what they have.

Tammy King, the executive director of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Johnson County, is the wife of Sheriff Adam King. Just recently, Sheriff King was indicted on two felony counts of retaliating against a witness and a misdemeanor charge of abuse of office involving sexual harassment. Instead of stepping aside to protect the credibility of the center she leads, Tammy King organized a GoFundMe to raise money for her husband’s legal defense.

This is more than poor judgment. It is a direct conflict of interest. The Children’s Advocacy Center exists to protect kids, support survivors, and hold abusers accountable. Its leader cannot be someone publicly fundraising for a man accused of intimidating witnesses and abusing his office in a case tied to harassment. Survivors and families must be able to trust that the center is fully on their side. Right now, that trust is broken.

Even if Tammy King personally believes in her husband’s innocence, her duty as the head of a child advocacy center requires putting children and survivors first. Every day she stays in this role sends a dangerous message: that loyalty to an accused abuser matters more than protecting kids.

We call on the Board of Directors of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Johnson County to immediately remove Tammy King as executive director and appoint leadership untainted by conflicts of interest. We further urge state-level oversight bodies to ensure that every child abuse center in Texas is led by people whose only loyalty is to survivors.

The children of Johnson County deserve safe spaces, not compromised leadership. Survivors deserve advocates they can trust, not enablers of abuse. The integrity of the center — and the safety of kids — is at stake.

Add your name if you agree: it’s time to remove Tammy King and protect the children of Johnson County.
